In our last post, we began informing you of the most common mistakes people make when they are dealing with the heating and air conditioning units in their homes. In this post, we will continue giving you some more clues regarding what you should and should not be doing when it comes to your HVAC system.

  • Take notice of appliance placement
You may not realize that appliances emit heat, but they do. This means that placing appliances like televisions, lamps and other appliances near your thermostat can cause it to think it is warmer inside your home than it is. When this occurs the temperature in your home tends to fluctuate. This can lead to you having higher bills in the summer and a frigid home in the winter.
  • Abandoning your fans
Simply because you have an air conditioning system in your home, does not mean that you have to abandon the ceiling fans in your home. When the two are used in unison, the fan helps to circulate the air in your home. Remember to have your fans turning clockwise during the winter and counterclockwise in the summer to get the maximum efficiency out of your fans and HVAC system.
  • Skipping filter changes
A dirty or clogged filter can cause your entire system to stop working. This is why it is important to ensure that you continually check your filters and change them when they become dirty. People who have pets may find that they have to change their filters more frequently than those who do not.
  • Trying to make repairs on your own
As we have mentioned before, the most qualified person to work on your HVAC system is an HVAC professional. You may think that performing repairs on your own will save you money, but you may be causing yourself to spend more in the long run if you are not capable of performing these repairs properly.
  • Hiring professionals who will charge the least amount
If you know you are not capable of performing repairs on your own, but you are looking for a professional who will charge you the smallest amount possible, you may not be making the best decision. Your home is an investment, and you need to treat it like one. Hiring professionals that charge very little will likely require you to have to hire another professional shortly after because the job was probably not done correctly.
