A Few Sewer Line Project Examples

In October 2026, Levoy Arts Center on East Pine Street in Millville, NJ, contacted Laury Heating Cooling & Plumbing with concerns about another sewer backup. Our plumber cleared the line with a curb plunger, then inspected it with a sewer camera.

Our inspection showed roots entering the terra-cotta pipe in several places. The line also had many low spots where wastewater could collect.  Overall, the pipe was in poor overall condition.

Therefore, we recommended replacing the sewer line. Our plumber identified a possible route through another section of the crawlspace toward the front of the building, then out to the street sewer main.

In September 2026, a homeowner on River Drive Avenue in Pennsville had a damaged sewer line affected by tree roots. We found an old 4-inch ABS pipe between the cleanout and the curb. We excavated the line and removed the damaged pipe. Then, we installed solid-core PVC at the correct pitch and added a two-way sewer cleanout. We connected the new pipe to the city sewer tap, tested the system, and backfilled the trench.

In July 2026, a property on East Broad Street in Millville had several drains backing up when the toilets were flushed. We found a problem with the main sewer line leading to the septic system. We obtained the required permits and excavated a trench from the house to the septic connection. We replaced the sewer main and installed a new two-way cleanout. Finally, we tested the line and backfilled the trench.

In January 2026, a homeowner on Pilgrim Way in Buena had a toilet that was completely backed up. The home also had no usable water. We found a broken sewer line beneath the mobile home. Our crew accessed the damaged pipe and completed an emergency sewer line repair. We checked the drainage before returning the plumbing system to service.

In July 2026, a homeowner on Stites Avenue in Cape May Point reported an active sewer leak in the crawl space. We found damaged piping and an old ABS drain trap. We removed the damaged trap and installed a new 2-inch ABS trap with new couplings. Then, we tested the repaired connection for leaks and proper drainage.

Signs of a Sewer Line Problem

Your main sewer line carries wastewater away from your home. A blockage or damaged section can affect several drains at once.

Call for service if you notice:

  • Several sinks, tubs, or toilets draining slowly.
  • Sewage backing up into a shower, tub, or floor drain.
  • Toilets gurgling when another fixture drains.
  • Clogs that return after cleaning.
  • Sewage odors near drains or in the yard.
  • An unexplained wet area near the buried sewer pipe.

These signs do not always mean the line needs replacement. An inspection helps identify the cause and the appropriate repair.

If sewage is backing up, stop using plumbing fixtures and call for service. Running water or flushing toilets can add to the backup. Keep people and pets away from wastewater.

Sewer Line Repair

A problem in one section of pipe may be repairable without replacing the entire line. The right approach depends on the location of the damage and the condition of the remaining pipe.

Common problems include cracked pipes, separated joints, and roots entering through openings. A blockage may also restrict flow through an otherwise usable pipe.

Sewer Line Replacement

Replacement may be needed when a pipe has collapsed, has extensive damage, or no longer carries wastewater properly. Repeated repairs may also make less sense when much of the line is deteriorating.

The scope depends on the pipe’s condition, depth, length, and accessibility. Some projects involve replacing a damaged section. Others require a larger portion of the line to be replaced.

Age alone does not determine whether a sewer pipe needs replacement. Its material, condition, and performance also matter.

Drain Cleaning or Sewer Line Repair?

Drain cleaning removes a blockage. Sewer line repair addresses physical damage to the pipe.

A single slow sink may have a clog in its individual drain. When several fixtures back up together, the problem may be farther downstream in a shared drain or the main sewer line.

Cleaning may restore flow if the pipe is sound. It will not fix a collapsed pipe, separated joint, or section that has settled out of position.

If the same blockage keeps returning, the cause needs further evaluation.

What Affects Sewer Line Repair Costs?

The cost depends on what is wrong and how the pipe can be accessed.

Factors include:

  • The location and extent of the damage.
  • The depth and length of the affected pipe.
  • The pipe material and overall condition.
  • Access beneath a lawn, driveway, sidewalk, or other surface.
  • The repair method and restoration work needed.

Common Questions

Not necessarily. A recurring backup can result from a blockage or a structural problem. The cause and condition of the pipe determine whether cleaning, repair, or replacement makes sense.

Roots can enter through cracks or loose joints. As they grow, they can restrict flow and contribute to backups. Removing roots may clear the blockage, but an opening in the pipe can allow them to return.

Some repairs require excavation to reach the damaged pipe. Laury operates its own excavator. The amount of digging depends on the location, depth, and repair method. Surface restoration should be discussed as part of the project.

The schedule depends on the length and depth of the pipe, site access, and the work required. Inspection requirements and restoration can also affect the timeline.
